Investigative reporting costs money. The readership-supported, independent online journals that still do it struggle to pay a decent wage to their writers. There's one in Halifax and I know two of its best writers who regularly submit incredible long-form investigative pieces that they research for weeks or sometimes months - which often involve multiple and increasingly costly access to information applications, trips around the province, and many, many hours of research and correspondence - and they make peanuts. But there's nowhere else where they can publish. So lack of resources is a real problem for dissident journalism.
