The point of invoking Kahneman (incorrectly as the essence of the work behind "Thinking Fast and Slow" as far as "fast" thinking goes is related to reflexes, automatic responses, etc.) is to try and make what they have to say sound like it's more academic somehow. It's an appeal to authority and an incorrect and inapt one. The fact that they are giving credence to the astroturfer as noted above should make anyone double check their sources, no? Having said that, it's the numbers that matter and I've not looked into it enough to have an informed opinion and I accept the problems stated above about getting accurate figures one way or another. I still find the more extreme elements of OffG as ridiculous; the "it's all a hoax to turn us into a police state/there are no excess deaths" kind of stuff. Bluefool posted a couple of days ago saying something like there is no doubt that "they" are exploiting the crisis for their own purposes and seeing how much they can get away with as far as removing civil liberties goes and also to cover another failure of the market capitalist system. I completely agree with that. I think the truth probably lies somewhere between the OffG "We're a police state now" and the official press releases from Downing Street. Time will definitely tell, or at least tell more.
