I expect so. Doesn't mean they're unviable tactics in the right circumstances, though I agree XR should steer well clear of high-risk / illegal underground actions. They should be the aboveground organisation, but I think there will also need to be an underground as the politer forms of rebellion show themselves to be ineffectual (as I expect they will, declarations of emergency & citizens assemblies notwithstanding) AND a strict firewall between the two for security reasons. See: https://deepgreenresistance.net/en/organization/structure/basic-structures-network-types/

Just been reading about the chartist uprising in Newport & S.Wales, 1839 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newport_Rising . Distinctions were blurred between peaceful civil disobedience and armed insurrection there, which may have been a mistake, as key figures could easily be pinned to subversive strategy in subsequent trials. It was no joke: they had their own forges making pikes and moulding bullets, people were threatened with execution if they didn't show up to the march, there were calls to draw up a list of people to assassinate, especially in the military so there wouldn't be an effective leadership for the crackdown. Haven't got all the way through it but it sounds like the chartist leadership didn't have the stomach to follow through on it (not that I blame them!), so the rebellion stayed localised and didn't deliver on the potential to spread it across the country. I believe they got most of the rights they were agitating for though in the end, at least.

Problem I guess is that the chartists had key points of self interest behind their campaign. With all of us firmly embedded in the capitalist economy who is seriously going to mobilise for a degrowth society? How are they going to pay rent, eat, drink etc without their monthly wage slave tokens? Bit of an impediment there!

In the meantime, absent a serious resistance movement, I guess we only have the deus ex machina gut punches of the long descent which you point out. What if that process takes too long? Many species and human cultures are already out of time...

    cheers,
    I

PS: if it wasn't clear only the first 6 on that list are the actual pledges XR are asking for. Disrupting industry sounds promising at least...
