Have you read Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy and the 2/3rds complete Book of Dust trilogy? Clive Barker's The Books of Abarat are more dark fantasy. 3/5ths complete. T. J. Bass' The Godwhale imagines a world whose resources are utterly consumed in serving hives of trillions of humans.
