Surgical masks impede the explosive flow of air when you cough so lower the R0 for the population, they dont really protect the wearer.
That is why they are called surgical masks, they protect the open wound not the surgeon.
N95 masks actually filter the air, and are therefore tight-fitting and protect in both directions directly.
