Very much agree with this review but Roger Deakins is a flat out genius and one of the greatest cinematographers ever. That's the only good thing about "1917" for me. I also agree that Mendes is over-rated. I think that because the yanks tend to go for his stuff the brit lovies look at him as "their guy at the big table" and fawn appropriately. Also agree on "Come and See"; a stunning film. "Paths of Glory" and FMJ from Kubrick and "The Thin Red Line" are others. It's hard to see where similar treatments for the crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan (not to mention Yemen) are going to come from.
