Speaking of that disgusting Blair book.... Archived Message

In 2011 Doris Mousdale, an Auckland bookshop owner and regular book reviewer on a right wing radio station, was lauded by the usual suspects when she announced that her shop would not sell a book by a Māori woman who had been found not guilty for the deaths of her two children. I decided to put her directly the question that begged to be asked....

Re your decision to boycott the Macsyna King book

    Dear Ms. Mousdale,

I was interested to hear you will refuse to sell the Macsyna King book on moral grounds. That's a laudable decision.

I presume that you have also refused to sell A Life by Tony Blair, Giving by Bill Clinton and Decision Points by George W. Bush. Each of these authors is directly culpable for the deaths of far more than just two children.

If, however, you do sell any or all of those books, could you please explain why?

    Yours sincerely,

    She replied:

You are correct I haven't sold the Blair Clinton or Bush books simply because that is the choice I made when I try to guess what will interest my customers. I make hundreds of decisions about not stocking or stocking books everyday.

    I replied to her....

    Dear Ms. Mousdale,

Did you choose not to stock the books by Blair, Clinton and Bush for moral reasons or for commercial reasons?

    Yours sincerely,

    Morrissey Breen

And she had the last word....

I just thought my customers wouldn't buy or order them which proved correct. We actually exchanged a copy of Blair for a customer who had been given it. This is Booksellers NZ policy that a book can be exchanged at any member bookshop if they have an exchange card It remains unsold at my loss.I have known Ian Wishart for many years and have previously sold some of his publications however I have never bought everything he published. Choice not censorship.
