My feeling is that the problem, as usual, is liberals, even well-intentioned ones. They're easily co-opted; they don't know how dirty the game is, how evil the enemy is, how enmeshed in "webs of endless deceit" we are, how a vicious class war is being waged twenty-four/seven by the business and financial class against the human race, how the media is a main weapon of that war. Not that it's easy to stay clean in a world where every institution that threatens meaningful change is a target of corporate capture or destruction, but for liberals who make up a large part of the environmental movement and are dispositionally prone to capitulation, it's pretty much impossible. So I wasn't that surprised by the McKibben part of the story. But Et tu Naomi? for sure.
