Small farms raising a few animals, or even larger farms raising more animals for local sale, is not the problem imo. The problem is factory farming and people eating way too much meat and dairy. Production for the fast and processed food industries is totally out of whack with what the planet should be asked to produce. Cheese filled pizza crusts, bacon in everything, meat on things that do not need meat - like natchos, huge servings of meat. It's all so wrong. I'm not a scientist but it seems to me that keeping a reasonable number of animals may even be beneficial for plant agriculture since manure and used animal bedding is so good as fertilizer and for soil building. Legumes can form the basis of a very satisfying and varied diet, with meat more as a treat. My partner and I haven't eaten meat or poultry for close to 50 years. We do eat fish, eggs & dairy but legumes are a big part of our diet.
