Don't know who Bid Surge is, but he mirrors the Duran's take on this episode. In military tactics, the Russians don't get everything right, I'm sure, but being able to make a tactical retreat when circumstances suggest or require it, shows maturity and rationality. Something lacking on the Ukrainian and Western side. Perhaps then the question should be "why take Kherson in the first place?" I imagine as this was captured relatively easily in the opening stages of the war, the answer would be "why not?", But increasingly effective Ukrainian resistance, significantly added by NATO ,has made the likelihood of a successful advance further west less likely and the bridgehead harder to supply.

I think Russia would be best advised not to bother taking more territory to the west. They've established a defendable land corridor from Crimea to west Russia, and it frees up resources to take on Donbas in its entirety. Ulimatrely Russia is going to have to decide whether they can get an agreement with a neutral but intact Ukraine that has access to the Black Sea, and can work on its own prosperity without threatening Russia or whether they want or can manage to force, a total Ukrainian capitulation and vassal state.,
