Monty emphasised morale, which is why he tried never to risk serious reverses and ignored fleeting opportunities. Morale is part of the reason why men fight but having the weapons and methods to counter those of the opponent is also vital. The German army in the 2nd WW didn't need morale as its discipline was savage enough to coerce the men (at least 9,000 men shot by their own army), who were allowed to pass it on to civilians. Ideology also helped, another reason for promiscuous atrocities against civilians. It's a model of warfare for those making war with dearth rather than plenty.
