I've mentioned these before; Colossal Cracks: Montgomery's 21st Army Group in Northwest Europe, 1944-45 (2007) by Stephen Ashley Hart is good on casualty conservation, morale maintenance and preserving as much of the army as possible to carry more weight in the post-war negotiations with the USSR and USA. Monty's Functional Doctrine: Combined Arms Doctrine in British 21st Army Group in Northwest Europe, 1944–45 (2015) by Charles Forrester carries on the story and explains how pragmatic problem-solving altered British-Canadian methods during Normandy and beyond to create all-arms teams (except for the arseholes in the RAF) to counter the unexpectedly less effective nature of massed artillery and the terrain of NW Europe compared to Italy and the desert.
