I don't think they were claiming it was but merely pointing out it's possibility to be considered.
Given they have likely been involved in exacerbating the unrest in Iran and that they consider Russia to be occupied with Ukraine they might think that now would be a good time to ramp up the Iran/Syria front as the Russians may be hard pressed to stop the US stomping all over another country as they did the first time round. Now all they need is a triggering event and along comes a missile attack. Handy.
I agree with wait and see but if they start using this attack as a justification for an increased military presence or even for military responses then it's definitely worth considering.
