"...as with the above attacks on low-income single mothers..." Well here's the actual waffle example: "I was in Nashville, Tennesee last year. After the show I went to a Waffle House. I’m not proud of it - I was hungry, ok. I’m alone, I’m eating and I’m reading a book, right? Waitress walks over to me and says “Hey, what you readin’ for?” Is that like the weirdest question you’ve ever heard? Not WHAT am I reading, but what am I reading FOR?! Well, godammit, you stumped me. Why do I read? Well….hmmm…I guess I read for a lot of reasons….but the main one is: so I don’t end up being a ####ing waffle waitress." -Firstly its an anecdote and it's so particular I reckon it probably happened. Likewise I have similar experiences of crass stupidity married to that anti-intellectual streak you sometimes find in working class folk, like this: My friend: "My wife asked me why I was your friend. She tells me she doesn't understand it as we have nothing in common..." Me: Yea? My friend: Yea...so I asked her what she meant by that. She replied..."Well, THEY READ BOOKS..." Am I kicking down? No. I'm delivering an illustrative narrative on the same shit that (also?) happens to be true. I come from a very working class background. I don't see working class people as some kind of collective horny-handed sons and daughters of toil full of heroic nobility. They are all different: as good or bad, fine or flawed as any other social grouping...aside from our elite of course who are pretty much all shits because that's what floats. The waffle anecdote essentially points out that sometimes people are their own worst enemy and are unfortunately often proud of it.
