While I agree with how western liberals like to use woke-washing on their imperialism, this point would make more sense if it wasn't in large part western imperialism that spread the heteronormative ideas around the world in the first place via christianity and islam - to the 'less advanced' areas, which prior to that didn't really have as much of an issue with different ideas about sexuality and gender (talking generally of course - there was a lot of variety - but certainly a lot less after we turned up - I'll post the usual vids I do when I make this point if you're interested in the details). I thought it was just standard 80s homophobia from Putin - though it's a bit harder to make the liberal pearl-clutching argument about it when half the politicians in America also seem determined to bring back 80s bigotries of one sort or another currently (I'm expecting the mullet back soon) .... |
