"Stop the War has from the outset called for the withdrawal of Russian troops..." Well that needs debated. Withdrawal from Crimea and the Donbas? Seriously? Crimea is effectively an impossible demand: it will never be returned as it strategically puts Sebastapol and the Black Sea at risk. Withdrawal from the Donbas would also leave two to three million Russians at the mercy of Ukraine which was what this whole thing was all about in the first place. The Ukrainian law against collaborationists makes any voluntary association with Russian forces punishable by up to 15 years in prison which effectively means most of this population being criminalised. As an example in Kherson when they took it: as even the Spectator points out " the Ukrainian authorities introduced stringent checkpoints where they questioned civilians – sometimes for days – about their potential collaboration." Out of the spotlight of media interest I'm sure it would get a lot worse: a Russian withdrawal could quite possibly mean a massacre. What number of UN troops would be needed to protect these people against a renewed invasion? How would they deal alternatively with the horde of vengeful Nazis newly trained in assassination and terrorist techniques and make-your-own-bomb courses by the Brits? Na. Donbas would become an ungovernable hell. Russia knows this so there will be no withdrawal. "Stop the War" need to think again.
