'At another trial by Oxitec for the same Aedes Aegypti gene-edited mosquito in Bahia, Brazil, in a test to see if the gene-edited mosquitoes would mate with local mosquitoes carrying Zika, malaria or other mosquito-borne diseases, following an initial reduction of the target population of mosquitoes, after some months the “population which had been greatly suppressed rebounded to nearly pre-release levels,” ' So what they're saying is some kind of 'booster' of GM mosquito releases will be needed on a regular basis for the forseeable future? Doesn't seem like a failure at all when you take into account the repeat business. Funny how that works... I remember hearing about this when they were first talking about trialling it in Brazil, and thinking it was totally insane at the time, playing god with an insect that must have an important role in the ecology even if it mainly acts as a 'commensal' around human habitation. Not surprised to hear it didn't work as planned, but worried there may have been unreported consequences that maybe people don't yet know about. Sick that they're pushing it through without even the Zika scare to make the case. I
