I think he's probably right. I doubt the bulk of Russians wanted any sort of war - after all it's their sons in their tens of thousands that are dyingin Ukraine. It was the Putin and the leadership that said "enough is enough" and undertook this military action, there was no plebiscite. beforehand There's no predictability in war and things could still turn out badly. But I'd agree, it's not "pride" that motivates Russia now, it's a steely determination to see this through to the end, which means the winning of major concessions from Ukraine and its western backers.
