It's a bit unfair to call Prof Dorothy Bishop "an elitist" - she's a Professor of developmental neuropsychology and a leading expert on children’s communication disorders. If she is in an elite, she's in one previously shared by Isaac Newton, Christopher Wren, Robert Hooke, Benjamin Franklin, Joseph Priestly, William Herschel, Robert Adam, Harvey Cushing, James Watt, Francis Crick etc etc. Any scientist, engineer, explorer, architect etc would be proud to be a MRS, not much less than winning a Nobel Prize. it's not wrong to be a member of an elite such as this one. It's an elite any British person should be very proud of. You're being churlish...

Whether her resignation is fair, not sure, but she's entitled to her opinion.

I have to say, your doffing of the cap seems to betray at least four naivetes ..

(1) an apparent assumption that the reader doesn’t understand how the world works and needs a narrative refreshment

(2) an assumption that the connection between your ease with the narrative and your your own relative privilege is invisible or irrelevant

(3) that your own relative privilege could never be connected to your ready acceptance of the narrative

(4) That there is any such thing as “MRS” as opposed to “FRS”.

I know at least as many FRS who held science back as who propelled it forward. One, elected just this year, who was so much the biggest bullshitter at a meeting I used to attend that I wondered how much longer he would possibly survive in science. Little did I know. Not the first, probably not the last.

The extent to which our universities are captured by private wealth is a thing to behold. The shittest individuals and the most outrageously crooked corporations offer money -- and the biggest, elitest institutions stand in line to launder their names by way of layers of scholarships, funds and other donations.

In the old days when Private Eye wasn't a complete joke, it did some good muck raking over the selling of MBAs by a Welsh 'university'. I fear that there isn't a higher education course that's not for sale. I suppose you must have some aptitude for a medical degree but getting on it takes Simony.
