I had the same, rather ungracious, thought that two docs one after the other, on Auschwitz and then Belsen, was brilliant timing to focus attention away from the current online holocaust to events 80+ years ago. Why is it now, at this particular moment, that two holocaust films are being shown -- is it commemorating a specific anniversary applicable to the camps or just a general round-up of WWII history? Brilliant timing nonetheless.

Earlier today there was a story on the BBC website about 5 Palestinian prisoners released by Israel who had been doused in chemicals and their backs set on fire, beaten and tortured (one man revealing the marks of torture) who had been given "in-depth interviews" by the BBC. Is this the belated result of pressure or unease by BBC hacks to redress some of the wall-to-wall bias and mount a pretence that they're covering both sides equally? I haven't watched any BBC news today so I don't know if this report features on the main bulletins. My hunch is that it hasn't and won't. I'd love to be proved wrong.

I was just reading a review of this and questioning myself as to why I would be somewhat antagonistic and cynical towards a recounting of one of the worst crimes against humanity and the answer is obviously because of the hypocrisy and double standards and the definite sense that this is being used as part of the hasbara to divert attention from the genocide in Gaza.

This paragraph made me choke with rage:

Schama spends much of this documentary bumping up against the limits of language when attempting to articulate his response to the atrocity; “deeply distressing” is sometimes the best English can do. He gives the final word to the Holocaust survivor Marian Turski, who died in February this year. “Evil comes step by step,” says Turski. “And therefore you shouldn’t be indifferent. Let’s start with reducing hatred.” He reads from a poem: “The most important thing is compassion. Its absence dehumanises.” Pity, compassion, sympathy: they can’t fight fascism alone – but a world without them doesn’t bear thinking about.

Take a look at the apartheid state's citizens and the western power elite in the last two years (it's longer really but let's be generous) and tell me how much compassion you see for the Palestinians. Fucking NONE.

It's about time for another violinist/jeweller/watchmaker/midwife/cellist/ballet dancer/logical positivist of Auschwitz book too I suppose.

Part of this feeling has to be a consequence of witnessing the genocide and the utter, unforgiveable depravity of the apartheid state over the last eighteen months which I think demonstrates how their actions could increase actual anti-semitism.

I'm sure the BiBiC is planning to make several in depth documentaries about the seemingly endless massacares, war crimes and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians....or at least thinking about actually mentioning them in their news broadcasts. Even that's probably beyond that disgusting propaganda trumpet.

It also remains true that MSM holocaust coverage (& in-fact most coverage in toto) still ignores the other eugenics of the NAZI state..ignores it now esp. at the time when Arbeit Macht Frie is being preached to the disabled....the Romanis the disabled and many other political and religious either active or apparent opponents of the NAZI state are ignored..'tis a function of Zionism this should be the case....Schama banned me from his feed years ago..

Then come the pictures no one can ever forget. Belsen contained thousands more dead who had to be moved by the truckload to mass graves. Lewis and Lawrie are there as these figures – more shocking because they are naked, more grotesque because starvation has robbed them of a recognisable human shape – are transported to 20ft-deep holes and then thrown, pushed or rolled in, their fragile limbs twisting unnaturally as they fall and join the pile. Lawrie says: “As the days went on, the bodies – they were dummies, they were dolls. You lost contact. Reality went.”

I've got eighteen months of video that are as or more disturbing although it's probably accurate in that they haven't been shown on British TV. The double standards make me angry beyond anything I want to type here.

Of course many of the prisoners in Belsen weren't Jewish and the ones that were would have yelled defiance at the zionist filth in Palestine for staining their good name.

Israel is currently breaking Palestinian bones with sticks and stones, and worse, but protesters are attacking innocent but proud Jews like Shama and Stephen Fry with words that must hurt their feelings unbearably

Simon Schama must have written a good book on some specialist subject at some point, otherwise his prestige is inexplicable. His popular book on British History were cukt and paste kings-and-queens stuff, greatly inferior to things done in the same line by Winston Churchill

His specialised subject as a public historian has lately been his own Jewishness. Whatever the topic he will bring it in. Like many who lived through Jeremy Corbyn'n pogroms he thinks of himself as a proxy Holocaust survivor, He feels the pain of Hitlers victims so intensely that he wants us to feel his pain in turn. The Holocaust seems to him an unbearably neglected subject - no doubt from veiled antisemitic motives.

It no doubt cause Simon and Stephen Fry - another lump of blubbering self regard - yet more inner pain to hear the word "genocide" bandied about by people who can have no right to it
