    not a silly question nick!

it is very possible to target specific species on the large side!
base around spawning fish follow feeding patterns, whether before spawning or after, they eat up large. snapper as most people will know can be caught in winter and most of witch are very big........ how ever the most productive time to target one would be september and october and then again in late march and april . clive and te awanga in my experience is usually the area they turn up first and then a week or two later they are caught in good numbers off bay view beach's, with my favorite being le quane rd, as warick stated they are suckers for a floating bait..
    good baits.....
pillies , squid and occy due to its toughness it lasts a long time.
this usally occurs when the north westers are in full swing( for the long liners) in between the north westers you get lulls and this causes sea breeze's ( easterly ) with seems to push the fish right into shore for surf casters!! morning and night great times!!

trev's are caught at mahanga in winter and are of a good size.this is the same for gurnard! the likes of waimarama and ocean beach hold good numbers of gurnard at time although they are quite small!

my fingers feel like there guna fall off so thats me hope this helps
