Regarding someone who posted SM got lucky, 15 hits isn't luck. They put the bat on the ball. The hit to tie it up, they had played small ball to move him over. UCLA was playing a stupid over the top shift based on the batter. They had the 1st baseman playing on the grass almost as a 2nd baseman. Any grounder to the right side was going to be super awkward. It was off their ace who came in to shut it down on short rest. Same for the extra innings hit that ended up being the winning base runner, he made contact, the pitcher tipped it unable to make a play, and the 2nd baseman also couldn't adjust and make a play, good on them. Then they hit a ball hard by the 3rd baseman, with the left fielder playing fairly deep there was no play at home, another helpful choice, but SM took advantage.
Saint Mary's isn't a great team, but a 140 RPI team that makes contact, has timely power, and plays D got it done.

As to our former coaches who have, in recent years, left LB, it begs the question. Why have both basketball teams, the baseball and softball teams, had such a hard time at LB being successful? I am beginning to think that they, the departed coaches, had coaching and recruiting abilities, but there may have been other issues limiting them. Is it just money? Is it the administration? I don't know the answers to these questions, but it sure is frustrating seeing where some of our sports programs sit today.

Nice to see our former Dirtbag coach do so well in the regionals! I think that he was given a LIFETIME contract to return to St. Mary's when he left LBS!!!!

St Mary's finished 15-12 in the weaker than Big West WCC and had a RPI of only 120. Would have finished in the middle of the pack in the Big West Conference. They sure did get hot against UCLA twice but also got some lucky breaks like tying the game in the 9th with 2 outs on a hit that bounced over the ucla 2nd baseman. Ca Poly beat St Mary's 14-1 and 5-2 deserved to win the regional.

Both Cal Poly and SM represented well.
SM's Freshman third baseman carried that first game againts UCLA, had three or four outstanding plays defensively, and then hit two bombs at the right time. The second game they used both small ball and power to get it done. They were 3rd in the nation for batting average, and it worked in the two games against UCLA, particularly yesterday with 15 hits on the day keeping the pressure on UCLA, but Poly shut them down both times.
Poly had it's stars show up, and got healthy at the right time. Solid pitching, timely hitting. Formula as old as time in postseason baseball.

Cal Poly is an example of a team that got hot when it mattered. They will play the winner of today's West Virginia vs. Kentucky game in the super regionals.

Congrats. They advance to the super regional.

I hope Cal Poly keeps winning and represents the Big West well.
It's not good that LB and Fullerton baseball have fallen on hard times.
