Yes, it all depends on the breed. I sometimes see colored eggs for sale, but less often than brown. Also, I never see the pink ones.
Maran's are the breed that most commonly lay the really dark brown eggs. I thought that it would be interesting to have one once, but never got it.
The odd thing that I learned was that the eggs start out really dark brown, then become lighter brown as the laying season goes on.
But, then the next spring, when the chickens start to lay again...they are very dark brown again.
Yes, eggs are eggs, when it comes to color. But, some eggs do taste better than others, depending what the hens eat, how much sunshine they get, etc.
I may not love the idea of worms, for example, but chickens that scratch for bugs and such have much better eggs than the ones that don't get to scratch.
I dislike, intensely, that chickens are kept indoors in super cramped spaces and never get a breath of fresh air. :-(
