"Trading Jonathan Greenard created right around $16 million in cap space for Minnesota. They still have to sign their draft class, and have other needs to accommodate as well."
Pasted from article that discusses Jauan Jennings visiting the Vikings.
1 player that isnt listed in the cap#'s is Harrison Smith. He's but cut, with june 1 designation. That designation creates some cap savings as well. 50/50 split? In unaccrued money.
It made me wonder how that June 1 split works if he is planning to retire. I think if he announced now. The full cap hit of his release is then realized in 2026. Begging the question. Is all the talk of an imminent return by the star player, predicated with the notion he hasnt announced retirement so he leaning on a return, based on faulty tea leaf dialogue. That maybe the delay is so the dead cap does divide on post june retirement. I do not know if retirement vs june 1 designation cut are handled differently in the bean count.
Jennings would be a nice get. I doubt he's shopping fot less$ than he wanted from niners.
Niners final offer was reported as $20m annual. Vikes? Spending that on a #3 wr? Have a nice visit lil jj. I suggest trying Denver? Pitt? Boston? Or Vegas perhaps?
Texas Viking... I didnt mean to offend thee.
Sorry if I did. I shoulda just said this: that the sptrac # is a high end estimation of all 9 picks making the 53 man roster and replace practice squader valuations used to get to the 51 back in march. Or some other creative bean count. Except, the cheapest 9 cap figures on the current roster are all at or above $1.0133m. If those 9 draftees all make the roster. On the listed current cap list from spotrac. Replacing the existing 9 the vikings would need to cut, assuming its all players in that minimum contract range on that pre draft 53. The difference is an increase of around $4m to $5m.
More likely. Not all 9 draftees make the final cut, and the actual increase is closer to- 2.5m- $3.5m, and some yet to be signed free agents wind up using 1/2-2/3rd of the $12m cap space the team thinks to be the actual #.
We shall see how it shakes out. Harry Smith or dbs?. A 3rd wr? A Center? Vet DT & a Greenard replacement. All needs if they are serious on being a playoff contender. $12m aint much to fill those 4-8 open jobs. Or, as I hope. The team stands on what it has. Uses that $12m to gets some ink on pending 2027 free agents like Metellus Cashman, Gink, Issiah Rodger, Brandel, O'Neal, Redman, Kyler, to name a handful.
