Terrible call.
Way to be the story mr umpire. By all means. Be relevant. Bc thats why fans watch. Car crashes, big hits & terrible officiating
I was going to note the great play Brooks Lee made earlier. The epitome of " fundamentals".
Even tho the runner was safe at 1st. Lee made it very close bc he barehanded the ball with his arm already cocked. Allowing him to geab & throw in one morion. Its somewhat a lost art, especially for 2b in the double play pivot. To catch the feed with both hands, and the throwing arm already cocked. The best pivot men of years past made it look easy. Oakland a's 2b Dick Green made it look so freakin easy. Of course. It relies upon a great feed from SS or 3b. In iakland. SS Campy Campanarus used to say, he always tossed it at Greens ear. Knowing green could adjust easiest to the slightly high inside pass.
Its spised to be seamless, 1 motion. Catch transfer & throw. All incorporated in the single motion of tagging the base with your foot as your arm is releasing the ball. In modern times. Its so often noticeably 4 seperate & distinct moves. The catch, the foot, the xfer & release. Its only a fraction of a second extra. But often. Its an even tiny fraction of a second between safe & out.
Baseball done right is artistry. Its ballet in cleats & sweaty jerseys. Accented by the scent of fresh mowed grass & steamy hotdogs.
Its rare in todays game to see that art. And we were told. Brooks Lee was going to be an extreme liability at SS. Nothing could be further from the truth. The coaches son is a fully competent throwback SS. A fundamentals 5 star. Great arm. Decent range.
Sure. There are SS with better range. Or better arms. Or better bats. But you will not find one with a better understanding of fundamentals. Thats a helluva foundation from which to play the position.... Lol, and as im typing lee bobbles the gimme & throws high. Clemons bails him out with the back tag. Cody is becoming a really solid 1b. I wish i could say the same for keaschall & Lewis. Alot of hit & miss defense from that pair. Id rather see Austin Martin playing 2b. He came up as a SS.
