Shelty addressed the ussue in his post game presser. Saying similarly. It was called as the rule is written. However. The ump that makes the call is doing so with Royce lewis blocking his view. The ump is behind 3rd base bag.
And as shelty noted. The rule emphasizes intent. It was a bang bang play. There wasnt time to have intent to block the path. Lewis caught & slapped tag in 1 motion, after racing to the bag just like the runner.
The intent if the rule. The spirit if the rule is to prevent the defender from gaining an advantage. Creating an instance where the ball can arrive late and bc the bag is blocked. The runner is tagged out.
In the instance friday. The runner is tagged out before his foot got near the bag. BC of that. There should not have been interference called churios foot at the moment the tag is applied, is 12 to 18" short of the bag.
Az,or whomever- your first moment on here in years. And you get an F for Fail.
Better luck next time.
I'll admit. The rule was applied by the letter of the law. Except for that one problem. The runner was out before any interference could be considered. If he was tagged out 3 feet shy if the bag. And there was a defender that had fallen down laying across the bag. Does the ump call the batter safe bc of interference? Of course not. The player was clearly out before interference was part of the equation.
Rules are rules. Yes they are.
Does a person in the process of being carjacked. Get a ticket for exhibition of speed bc they burned rubber to get away?
The letter of the law is clear. Burning rubber is exhibition of speed.
The letter of the law is a guidline. Common sense should always trump the moment a DICK wants to exercise unwaranted power, and has to use " letter of the law" to overcome what the eyes see.
Churio was out. Period. Terrible call!
