Don't forget the 50 limit on single carriageway roads for commercial vehicles Jerry - that was the reason for my 3 points + fine in an Astra van in the early '80s, not the dual carriageway restriction. Like you I was unaware of the limits pertaining to "commercial vehicles" & my then employer was similarly unaware but, as is said, ignorance of the situation is no excuse.

I got around the situation by getting the then employer to buy a basic Astra "Merit" estate next time - same 2 door chassis, same 1300cc engine with 4 speed box (tightwad wouldn't spring £150 extra for 5 speed), same performance but it had side windows and rear seat so was obviously "safer" and didn't have the speed restrictions that applied to the van version. IIRC there were "downsides" for the employer doing this, as the Vat couldn't be reclaimed for car but could be for a van.

IIRC I had to include my licence (and the cheque) along with the return paperwork that came with the NIP. It was returned in the post (minus the cheque) - with unwelcome additions ! I guess things are different with photo licences (which I still don't have).
