You couldn't make it up.

As I got done for speeding in my van this year I paid my fine put my hand up and admitted to breaking a stupid speeding rule ie doing 60mph on a A road because I can only do 70mph on a motorway. Brings it home how stupid it is I use the M11 quite a bit and a lot of it is two lane only so not sure how they call it a motorway but I can drive at 70. When the M11 ends it goes onto the A14 which is a lovely wide three lane road but I can only do 60mph. Crazy. just received a letter from the police confirming that I have paid my fine but could I fill in the enclosed form with all my driving licence details. The bit you couldn't make up is on the request letter is all my driving licence details. What a complete waste of time and money.

Don't forget the 50 limit on single carriageway roads for commercial vehicles Jerry - that was the reason for my 3 points + fine in an Astra van in the early '80s, not the dual carriageway restriction. Like you I was unaware of the limits pertaining to "commercial vehicles" & my then employer was similarly unaware but, as is said, ignorance of the situation is no excuse.

I got around the situation by getting the then employer to buy a basic Astra "Merit" estate next time - same 2 door chassis, same 1300cc engine with 4 speed box (tightwad wouldn't spring £150 extra for 5 speed), same performance but it had side windows and rear seat so was obviously "safer" and didn't have the speed restrictions that applied to the van version. IIRC there were "downsides" for the employer doing this, as the Vat couldn't be reclaimed for car but could be for a van.

IIRC I had to include my licence (and the cheque) along with the return paperwork that came with the NIP. It was returned in the post (minus the cheque) - with unwelcome additions ! I guess things are different with photo licences (which I still don't have).

Thanks Nigel. Problem for me is I drive my van to deliver bikes and get me to race meeting but I also drive three different cars so easy to forget the rules when driving.

My employer kept asking me why i took so long to drive between sites in a 3 ton pick up truck and got shitty. He said his BMW car can do the journey much quicker so i asked to borrow it so i could comply with his orders. Then, i asked him if he wanted me to exceed the speed limit then the shit shut up.
Some companies get very odd and this one wanted to know why i did 4 more miles than Google said it was.
I was told to use this Google route he provided taking 20 minutes longer as it was a 1 track farm road with a lot of tractors running on it. I asked if it was alright to have all the tree branch scrapes on the new truck and he went quiet but insisted i continue so getting there took longer and damaged the truck.
I did tell him that metalled roads are much better for the truck than the mud tracks the tractors use and asked if he drove that way in his BMW. It turned out he would only use the main road like i previously did.
At one point, they paid mileage if i took my car and the journey took 11.6 miles in every car i used. He set it as 10 miles so i lost 1.50 each day so i asked who would come and get me after i had travelled the 10 miles ? This also altered the distance to the next building by 1.6 miles so i explained neither building had moved and i was back to claiming the actual mileage.
Further asking, i found that they said these mileages were as the Crow flies. I just could not resist asking if i could use the crow next time.
I could be an awkward sod when messed about but did work there 27 years. Too many bosses all making different rules

Something similar happened to me. Years ago when I joined my auld job, I got paid rent allowance, but only if I lived within 30miles. I got told I need to move as I was almost 50 miles away. I said 'I can almost see my house' (albeit it was from the other side of the Clyde). Upshot was we moved across the river for a few years, then the mileage allowance went up to 50 miles, so moved back home. I then got called in at short notice so could claim mileage. I submitted my claim for 90miles only to be told that it was only 5 miles each way. They stuck a compass in a map and drew a circle. I ended up digging out my auld rent allowance mileage where they stated it was 45miles.....They paid up..
