The KH - I'm in

In between other jobs I have now split the cases on the KH.

The "imput shaft" is toast - there is a wear ridge on it and the bearing is a loose fit on the shaft.

The clutch "sleeve" bearing is worn, and there are 3 gears that run on bronze bushes that wobble around on the shaft.

I think that it has been run with no oil in at some time in its life.

Undecided about how I am going to refurb it, clearly needs a new input shaft, for the gears that are wobbling around on the shaft, I suppose I could get some new bushes made (Kawasaki dont spare these items) and reamed to fit the shaft.

Not a job I can do.

Also need to replace the ball bearings (3 off) and needle bearings (2 off) if the latter are available, ball bearings are just standard items.

Best bet might be to see if I can source a complete replacement set of shafts and gears, there are some on E - Bay at various prices, but then it is a gamble that it would be better than what I have.

After this is all done and sorted I'll probably be reluctant to sell it after spending all this time effort and money

Think I will sit on it for a while before deciding.

Who needs a signature anyway......

I would go for a used gear set if spare individual parts are hard to find.
I suppose the good thing about old Triumph bits is that every part is available from what i have found on mine.
Not worked on old Jap bikes much. The Honda CB750 i bought about 25 years ago is still running and just had a couple of ignition parts since the boy bought it off me. That engine has not been touched after near 50,000 miles.

One gearset in the States is $20 for a complete set but would be about 100 after all the fees added on but there are some in the UK

I though you had mentioned a few posts back that you had a lathe, Andy. Could you not just re-bush the gears "in house" ?

Nigel - yes I do have a lathe, no problem making something that is an interference fit, i.e. bush to gear, but the bore of the bush would probably need honing to size, a hone is something I dont own.

Edit: Just looked up the price of a reamer around the £20 mark so not as expensive as I thought, perhaps "in house" rebushing is something I can do.

Why ? What is wrong with finish boring a bush to sixe ?

Reaming is probably easier to get a bore to a known tolerance with a decent finish (and £20-ish for a suitable reamer isn't that expensive in the greater scheme of things engineering) , but a stiff boring bar with a sharp tool should not have too much of an issue getting size & finish in a bronze bush - just sneak up on it.

Fair comments Nigel - I have a couple of boring bars, guess the thing to do is just give it a try, nothing to lose.

Guess the bore is in the region of 20mm, and width of the bush about 12mm - not took the gears off the shaft yet.

Re the input shaft, think I will probably go down the NOS or good used route.

Who needs a signature anyway......
