MoT's - How much?

My local family run bike MoT place only charge £25 instead of £30, & before he emigrated another local guy only charged £20. Been present at both when they've carried out tests, & they have been thorough, & picked up faults to fail, or issued advisories. Although both were sympathetic to older bikes.
So how does the funding of MoT's work? Do they get a set fee from the Govt to do the test?

I thought they didn't get anything from the government? And the governments "price" is just the maximum they are allowed to charge so they can discount as much as they like.
I'm sure our south west correspondents will be along with the facts shortly.

Will is spot on. The charge is determined by the test station and is theirs to keep. This applies to both bikes and cars. My local car dealer only charged me £20 last week for an MOT test on one of our cars. When Imqueried it he simply said "we do this deal for our regular customers and in particular people like you who have been buying cars from us for he last 20 years."

Other opinions may be available but this one is always correct.

Yes depends on the dealer or station as you can imagine get the car MOT through Graham and don't get Porsche prices

When I lived in Coventry a bike dealer we all knew passed everything once passed a bike by looking out of the office window as it was raining outside.

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your viewpoint, the next bike in line was owned by a Dept of Transport MoT station inspector!

I asked my local 3-man shop that does all my minor car work about the required $20 annual state car inspections, asking if they were not just a break even service that he did for his customers. (The $20 is fixed by law here; you can't ask more or less).

He said he couldn't run the business without them. They do about 20 per day, 120 per week, so around $40 - $50k a year, and not taxed by the state.

I admit a "friend of mine" (ahem) once got a MOT without the bike being inspected.

Local VW dealer lost his MoT station status + large fines + all the testers had licences revoked when a VOSA inspector turned up to see a car that had been logged onto the system and found it to be parked up not being tested. Dealership closed not long afterwards.

I used to have quite a casual relationship with my local motorcycle MoT tester - taking a bike in for test was more of a social event than a chore, but they knew I wouldn't take a bike in if it wasn't fit to pass. Still checked them, but never found anything I had missed or overlooked. Didn't have any kind of axe to grind trying to fail bikes to get work either, as they only tested and didn't have a repair workshop - main business was actually a boat chandlers !

Sadly the elderly proprietor didn't reopen after Covid.

I once had my 5TA failed on the rear light/brake light. Somehow, I had joined the wires from the the lights to the connection under the seat in reverse. He told me to take it outside and fix it and he would re-test it. I did, told him and he said bring it back into the garage and he would do the re-test. Why not just look at it here I asked. He told me if he did that and a Ministry man was watching outside he would lose his licence, so I pushed it back in and he passed it, good man.

A 'friend' of mine once got an MoT by packing the fork dust caps with fresh tissues outside the MoT station to disguise leaky fork seals. Worked a treat he told me... He wouldn't normally do that but having bought the bike a hundred miles from home with no MoT he wanted one in order to ride it home legally that afternoon.

I should add that it was long ago before the computerized system that "my friend" acquired this MOT.
Now of course the bike wouldn't need a MOT as even then it was over 40 years old.

Bought a bike years ago that I found had old fashioned (absorbent) string in the dust caps, presumably for the same reason.

There has been a long thread running on a motorhome forum arguing why, if you take a vehicle in for MOT and service the garage is obliged to do the MOT before the service. The reason given that they are required to do them in that order is so that the VOSA data is a reflection of vehicles whilst actually in use.
I'm a bit doubtful as obviously you could have the service done before the MOT was booked for a later visit.

I always treat the car to a service if it is good and passes the MoT.

If it is bad and fails I punish it by making it wait for a service.

I thought everyone did that!

My boy takes his repaired cars to an MOT station charging him 37 pounds but the public are charged a bit more as retail customers. I pay 29 pounds for a bike MOT locally. Not had any car fail for over 40 years as they are checked before they go in.

Bloke who does my bikes charges just under £30 for the MOT.

Very old school place, run by old school bloke who understands bikes, dont get me wrong, if there is something wrong he will spot it.

Who needs a signature anyway......

Last time I took the Ariel for an MOT they failed it on the rear brake( I had no troubles with it) so decided to adjust it simple but didn't have my tools with me

So they only had metric spanners They passed it anyway

As said unfortunately not on that day. Though in over 50years of ownership it only let me down once the clutch centre nut came un done on the Chelsea embankment soon done as a dry clutch
