Pity it didn't blow the whole rotten edifice well north of the Shetlands ! That at least would have provided a blank canvas to start again to build back better.

Most British seaside resorts are bit past their best these days, but Blackpool is really not a pleasant place & recently determined to have the lowest life expectancy in the UK due to the levels of depravation there. A place best avoided IMO.

Also Blackpool council have decided not to run their heritage trams to say money. Another reason not to visit.

Ever been to Rhyl?

Unfortunately yes - and never again !

Went a couple of years ago for the Rhyl "Airshow" - fortunately the Premier Inn we had booked was outside Llandudno & not in Rhyl.

I don't recall it being that bad late '60s / early '70s. My aunt/uncle lived in Rhos-on-Sea (Colwyn Bay) for a few years & we used to holiday with them. Rhyl just seemed to be acres of static caravan parks now and the seafront was very tired, with pervasive smell of fried "food" everywhere.

Sad.

We used to caravan at Penrhyn Bay - Dad bought a sited caravan off his mate - I think it was made of painted hardboard! We used a family tent there a couple of times later before venturing to Treaddur Bay & Barmouth & Rhosneigr & others.
Treaddur Bay was 100 miles from home - 4 hrs in the old E83W Ford

Went there(Great Yarmouth) a few years back, when my wife was tracing her family history. In Victorian times one side was in the fishing industry.
It was off season, so most of the tacky stuff was shut. The pubs made a rough 'Spoons look classy. For some reason, seemed to have lots of healthy looking youngsters riding around on customised mobility scooters.

Come to sunny Exmouth and sit around the marina flats and be called a peasant. When those were built, Norma Tebbit bought 2 of them as holiday retreats. They still do not sell well at all but now they are designated flood risk, no loans to buy one so most rented out.
The first owners back about 30 years ago did not appreciate me cooking mackeral on the beach under the balconies. When i took the empty cockle shells back to the shore for dumping, they did not like that either. Traditions are hard to stop and these activities were going on in the 1700s. The shells are great for bare feet walking. Scratches a bit.
Tourists still flock here to stay in caravans on the cliffs and get rocked by wind all night

I spent a lot of time in Gt Yarmouth in my Decca Survey days in the 70's and 80's. A lot of the North sea survey boats went out from there. We supplied the Navigation and survey equipment so I spent a lot of time dangling from ship masts fitting antennas. Strange but I fell in love with the place and enjoyed both winter and summers there. Great fun with all the Northerners that descended there for there holidays. Happy Daze.
