The simple fact is that if someone thinks everyone has an equal opportunity at birth shows their finger is far removed from the pulse of society! Some people are born into privilege and others poverty. The days of "pulling yourself up by your boot straps" are long gone. To think or believe in that mindset is an antiquated thought process. While you do have valid concerns, allow me to bring light to another thought: This country was built on the principles of a union of "we the people". If this is indeed supposed to be the case then why is everyone looking out solely for themselves? How many of your neighbors do you know? When you go home do you give a kind wave then duck your head and get inside? Would you trust the people around you if the proverbial sh#+ were to hit the fan? The days of looking out for one another have long since passed us by, which is in my mind is sad. Should people have a free ride? Absolutely not. But questions like this lend to the problem rather than finding a viable solution. I don't have specific answers but what I do know is this: If we started looking out for one another and shift our mindset to the betterment of the WHOLE then we will all individually be better off too. And I'll do you one better than that! Should I have to pay into a social security system, the benefits of such I will never reap?
