A few weeks ago I was in Amarillo for the USMTS modified show.
Got there early,had some time to kill,so I ventured out to the old dirt track which is still "kinda there"..the Amarillo speedbowl.


Used to go there all the time as a kid&heard it still existed.
Route 66 opened up&pretty much buried the place.
I get there&it's still standing,so I get out and walk around.
Couple minutes later couple guys in a golf cart roll up..guy introduces himself as Randy Carthell who's owned the joynt for 20 or so years.
He proceeds to tell me that he& his business partner(other guy in golf cart) are planning on re=opening the old place& are preparing for a 10k to win 305 winged sprint show this september..
he even showed me his "new" $75k water truck for emphasis.
Back in the 90's he used to put on 50k to win modified shows...some were successful,
...others not so much.
Anyway,considering that most of the grandstands have been sold& what's left are pretty shabby,not to mention the whole place is pretty much dilapidated.
Says he's gonna run after route 66 shuts down for the season.
I don't see it happening...but there are locals who swear he's crazy enough & will do it.
Guess we'll see...wouldn't hold my breath,but he's done this kinda crazy stuff before.
