Last night Route 66 speedway...$5000.00 for 305 winged sprints... John Carney of El Paso Tx. Won. 45 or so sprints. 140 or so cars. Heard the place went SRO,hour before show time. A mods 22 cars 1. Mike Stroud SRP 2. Dustin Austin D&M 3. Alan Sharpenstein SRP ...guess it a pretty good night of racing in west texas.

Lots of cars and lots of folks we missed the main but had a great time trying. Track took rubber during the first b main and went pretty much hammer down stay in line after that, congratulations to John CarneyII in the Briley Trucking #5 car and to Amarillo for supporting the show.

Chuck is 305 SC racing that much cheaper than 360 racing?

Joe the anwser to that is yes and no. Hope that clears things up for ya. And the show in Amarillo was realy good even though the Alb cars didnt fair real well. You have to love seeing 40 sprint cars racing for $6000,00 to win. And it even payed $100.00 for non transfers
Rumors...

A few weeks ago I was in Amarillo for the USMTS modified show. Got there early, had some time to kill,so I ventured out to the old dirt track which is still "kinda there"..the Amarillo speedbowl.
Used to go there all the time as a kid&heard it still existed. Route 66 opened up&pretty much buried the place. I get there&it's still standing,so I get out and walk around. Couple minutes later couple guys in a golf cart roll up..guy introduces himself as Randy Carthell who's owned the joynt for 20 or so years. He proceeds to tell me that he& his business partner(other guy in golf cart) are planning on re=opening the old place& are preparing for a 10k to win 305 winged sprint show this september.. he even showed me his "new" $75k water truck for emphasis. Back in the 90's he used to put on 50k to win modified shows...some were successful, ...others not so much. Anyway, considering that most of the grandstands have been sold& what's left are pretty shabby, not to mention the whole place is pretty much dilapidated. Says he's gonna run after route 66 shuts down for the season. I don't see it happening...but there are locals who swear he's crazy enough & will do it. Guess we'll see...wouldn't hold my breath, but he's done this kinda crazy stuff before.

yes Carthal is an odd duck went to 3 of his big $$ races and had to pay extra for a real seat. NO crowd way more people in the pits at $35 a head & 100$ per car. IF the track could run (I think the county shut it down) it would have run a few shows since 93 but it hasn't. However the place has faced other compitition before. Amarillo had a paved track in the mid to late 70's that burried the hastings ave track. It had been closed when Carthall aquired it

Odd duck,is an understatement... He asks why I'm in town.I tell him, came to watch the USMTS mods race. He tells.me...Ya, know ol'Bill (route 66 owner) is fixin' to go under. I look at him...Really!? He says...yup,they ain't drawin' any fans or race cars. I look at him...ummm, o.k. He says,yup...that's why we're fixin' to open up again. ...guy's a bit...of a whack, for sure. He ran a couple of shows 4/5 years ago. $1000.00 to win for mods...they pulled 8 cars,Dee Gossett won. Winged sprint show pulled less&he cut the purse. Good friend of mine, actually built the asphalt track. ...it kicked ass for the first couple years. By buddy sold it for what he says was "dumb money" It lasted a few more years. It's now a mobile home park/housing development. I can't think of ANY other track in the southwest that pulls the crowds&cars...that Route 66 does on a weekly basis.

In my opinion the 305 sprint car is less expensive to get competitive in (initial investment, equal HP, more reliable) and provides a reasonable platform for the fast drivers to compete as well as provides an achievable path for the aspiring drivers to get into open wheel racing with competitive equipment at a somewhat reasonable price point.
