It must also be recognised the account from an eye witnesses on shore would also be suspect, it is extremely difficult to judge distances over water, especially when there are no markers to substantiate accuracy. On land there are always objects that are indicative of distance and can be used as a guide for validation.
However, there is a slim chance the MPI may bring to the skipper's attention complaints have been lodged. If, as it has been reported in the post above, the vessel was not fishing, even that is most unlikely.
