Porongahau Trawlers Get Close

Fished P"hau this avo. A fantastic sea but a lot of crabs unfortunately and not a lot of fish. Still I nearly took home a netfull of something. Didnt think he was gonna stop.

The Kontiki down from me nabbed a gurnard, kahawai and a lemon. But they nearly bumped into this fella too.

Whats really disturbing is where this pr**ck came from. Cruised right out of the Te AngiAngi Marine reserve.

In all my visits I have never seen one in anywhere near that close.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Locals didnt recognise the boat. Couldnt quite read the no with there binoculars. Pretty discouraging really.The wild west of fishing. Just help yourself.....

Tried the MPI website this morning. Not surprisingly there online message form doesnt seem to take pictures. Useless.......

Hells teeth Kane didnt take you long to get out of there. Hope your not to sore. No fish at all unfortunately, a lot of cleaned out hooks tho. Sea was mint too, best Ive seen it. Dusk would have produced but I wasnt keen to stay that late as access is pretty variable.

Sent pics to MPI. To be fair they were very quick to respond and have logged the pics with some part of the organisation that keeps track of trawler movements. They have some concerns about the proximity to the marine reserve but overall.... Can't do anything.

Rex, it would be very difficult for MPI to act on the evidence of a camera, especially with a panorama shot. A lawyer with only a meagre knowledge of photography would discredit such evidence because distance can greatly distorted.

It would all depend on the lens used, magnification with telephoto, or if using a prime lens. The end result would have a huge variation, giving the impression the vessel was a lot closer than it actually was.

The vessel's master needs to be caught in the act and unfortunately that is a lot easier said than done.

In this case I wasnt the only one the beach watching this boat. There was a couple with a kontiki who had a pair of binoculars and were desperately trying to get a number and name to report him as well. There were a few others on the beach as well.

I had no doubt it was a long shot but you never know. 3 or 4 eyewitnesses and photos may have made all the difference. And if you enhance some of the other pictures I have, some of the numbers are a bit more clear. It was worth a try. Anyway ro be fair I'm not sure his net was in the water at the time so for all I know he might have been having a cup of tea.

I think some of you need to know what a trawler looks like, this is in fact purse seiner. There is know way given their closeness to the shore would they be setting their net.
This style of fishing the net can be a couple km's long and 500 feet deep.
Cant make out name but pretty sure it one of Sanfords boats.
Rex you are right his net is not in the water.

Was at Blackhead all weekend, this trawler and one other were fishing several miles offshore all weekend. Chasing skippies we thought, heaps around. They came nowhere near the reserve so I assume they were resting up.

Rex, I was not doubting your word the vessel was close to the shore, I was pointing out a photo would be of little use as evidence against the vessel's skipper.

It must also be recognised the account from an eye witnesses on shore would also be suspect, it is extremely difficult to judge distances over water, especially when there are no markers to substantiate accuracy. On land there are always objects that are indicative of distance and can be used as a guide for validation.

However, there is a slim chance the MPI may bring to the skipper's attention complaints have been lodged. If, as it has been reported in the post above, the vessel was not fishing, even that is most unlikely.

Well whatever it was I'm sure it wouldnt have helped my chances of catching a fish. Just my luck to have a bloody purse seiner cruise in and park itself right in front of my rods. Just the way my fishings going at the moment.
