I understand you! But we have strong tides and ripp currents here and a east wind most of the time. To get a large bait out you have to overcome its size somewhat with heavy weights that are useless with out having spider legs.
Sharks ,bull reds, black drum, and stingrays ,lots of water current. You put all these things together with at least 30 to 50 # line plus the fact the dep water where the fish are is a long ways from shore. No its not nessasary . But if your gonna fish for bigger fish its a whole different scene. I have used 40 lbs sand bag for shark fishing the surf and sometimes thats not enough to keep from washing out. Thats used when you yak a bait out several hundred yards from shore. Just fishing the piers and jetties with a big bait takes alot to holded the current.
