I love fishing light in the surf and at Pikowhai in particular, long casts are not required. Fish work quite freely along the rear of the breakers especially on the evening change of light. My grandsons who were still very young would never have managed a 60 metre cast. However, they regularly came home with nice snapper, gurnard, trev's and kahawai but the rays would have them struggling.
It was not uncommon to have other anglers ask about our success, my answer never varied. Take off the 5oz grip lead, put on a 3oz standard lead and allow the bait to move, you will find the fish when the fish can't find you.
