Murphys campground Matata

the other half and I are wanting to head to Murphys campground in Matata over labour weekend for a couple of days surfcasting, has anyone from the message board stayed there and is it a good place to stay for the price.

Stayed there a few years ago absolutely hated it. Moved on after one night. I would stay a the Thornton motor camp as they support us with events and accommodation . Excellent facility .

The wife and I have stayed there on numerous occasions and it is a friendly peaceful spot right on the beach.It is nothing flash but just a nice tidy convenient camp

What did you hate Phil? Have stayed here many many times and only have good things to say about it. Great for families great fishing and great people.

It was a few years ago now, it may have changed hands but a mate had the same issues. The guy that was running the place must have been ex military the guy had no people skills what so ever. the kids were told off if they took sticks or sea weed off the beach.
Thornton has very good facility's and they support the NZACA for the Nats and the Snapper 1000, I just like to support our sponsors.
Like I said it was a while ago it may have changed.

Going to give the place a chance the missus wants to take the mutt with us, will give thornton camp a go on another weekend we head down there again after labour weekend as I am looking at doing another weekend down that way when my son comes up for xmas.would love to have a crack at the next snapper 1000

Good location to stay fin-nor stay there occasionally and have never had any problems. Think there very "Green fingered" but thats cool. Like the others said facilities are basic but that is reflected in the price. The hosts are friendly enough tho mrs Murphy is a bit away with the fairies at times, they are very helpful and accommodating. Don't forget to recycle your empties

. Fish in front of the camp or west or east by 500m to 1km sees you fishing some nice spits and high tide channels. Goodluck!

I agree with Phil, but to be fair Ive never stayed there. I rang once to make an enquiry about staying there and found the owner quite unhelpful/disinterested. Spent my money elsewhere as a consequence. Mostly Thornton is dog friendly too.

Talking a mate (yes I have more than one) he stayed at Murphys recently with his companion dog and found it ok.

Stayed at DOC camp at Matata about three months ago $6 a night for an adult hot shower 50cents for three minutes. About a minutes walk over the dune to fish. Across the road to the pub for refreshments. Total bliss.

Fin-nor, when I lived in the Bay of Plenty, Murphy's always had a good enough reputation. Never mind about fishing the beaches there, head north for about five kilometres to Pikowhai, the surfcasting there can be bloody fabulous.

I am an ex bay of plenty boy myself hangler, was bought up at papamoa beach spent lots of time at the beach and used to go to otamarakau & pikowai a lot. Really miss living in the bay of plenty.

Fin-nor,that makes two of us, the surfcasting is superb, likewise trout fishing.

I love fishing light in the surf and at Pikowhai in particular, long casts are not required. Fish work quite freely along the rear of the breakers especially on the evening change of light. My grandsons who were still very young would never have managed a 60 metre cast. However, they regularly came home with nice snapper, gurnard, trev's and kahawai but the rays would have them struggling.

It was not uncommon to have other anglers ask about our success, my answer never varied. Take off the 5oz grip lead, put on a 3oz standard lead and allow the bait to move, you will find the fish when the fish can't find you.

The other sinker we use that was developed for that very stretch of beach is the Scud available from in that area at the local tackle stores or from us at Tackle Tactics, check out the website available from 3oz through to 6oz.

Is there accommodation at the DOC camp or do you have to have a caravan/ tent?

I might just grab some of those in the weeks to come phill last time i looked i had a box full of 5oz break out sinkers.Plus I need to respool the shimano aerlex and the penn 850 with some new mono seeing the reels saw a lot of use last season. Hangler my father used to own the shell station (now shut down)that is at papamoa on the state highway back in the 80's. Our goto fishing spot was over the papamoa beach road from where we lived on simpson road had some good times on that beach and in the dunes as a kid also spent alot of time down the end of bell road whitebaiting in the kaituna. When we moved to te puke I spent alot of time trout fishing the kaituna out the back of affco meat works and the waiari stream

The doc camp is caravan and tent going by the web info I have a good 3 person great outdoors dome tent I just recently scored for $30 off trademe and it has seen bugger all use and is mint for its age :D

What did you do in the Dunes Rex?

The snapper don't know where the car park is!

Rex didn't mention the dunes Gary :D I did and no it did not involve girls was far too young for that sort of carry on. As kids we used to make up boards out of ply wood and make the underside slippery by polishing them up till they were shiny then we would ride them down the steep sand dunes (opposite kirpatrick place in papamoa)was lots of fun especially if the boards did not stop and you ended up in the lupins at the bottom :D

Phill, I would never have used anything other than a scud sinker providing the conditions allowed. There were times when a breakout was required but surprisingly, this wasn't very often. I still carry scud sinkers with me now, they are my pick of the bunch.

Ooooops! Sorry fin-nor I only thought of Rex in Dunes, not you. Sand sliding is great if you can find enough sand and you are fit enough to climb to the top again and again.

I am somewhat disturbed that any one would think of me in any form in the sand dunes. However the ones at Pikowai are most inviting in my humble opinion. Using scud 3 oz sinkers and so on even more interesting. Its interesting to realise you get so set in your ways that you don't even think of something as simple and clearly as effective

I for one am very keen to give them a whirl Phill the other sinker that caught my eye was gary's gurnard sinker which looks similar to the scud and looks like it would go well on a pulley rig so I will have to get my arse into gear and sort that out soon as I have been feeding my shooting habit lately with reloading gear and attending feild target shoots etc
