Bob, the last couple of years I spent running the fishing lodge at Lake Aniwhenua, I purchased a spinning rod for fishing the Rangitaiki river. Now before you groan, this was made by Avion (sp) and was thinner and lighter than my five weight fly rod. This rod is so lively (I still have it) I would spin fish with weighted nymphs, no shot was necessary. A 250 gram fish tested the rod - a two kilo model tested me. A tiny Shimano reel loaded with two pound braid completed the picture, I usually fished a weighted 'hair and copper'.
Once more this was the kind of sport I love, and probably got me hooked on light fishing in all it's many forms. I have much happening in the near future, a four month trip to China in May springs to mind. On my return I may take a sentimental journey to Aniwhenua. This will not be just to fish the waters but to pay my respects to my first wife, her ashes are scattered on the front lawn of the fishing lodge. I would like to introduce my new wife to her, somehow I know she will will approve.
