It was a proof of the knot's strength it held up for so long. Usually a knot requires a few casts and retrieves to settle down quite snugly, well this knot was truly thrown in at the deep end.
I haven't had any problems with the hooks I use, I get these from the UK. I like them because of the long shank with a wide gape, there is still plenty of hook point and barb hanging out, a large bait does not block or crowd the hook. They are nowhere near as heavy as say a 'Black Magic' and the way I can present a whole anchovy is very life-like. I use a 4/0 with a 3/0 as a keeper.
I have noticed one anomaly that is a bonus: if I hook another specie of fish, frequently the fish is caught on the keeper hook. When the fish has removed the bait from the main hook it then gets nailed on the keeper, the double hook pennel rig really does have a double advantage: it keeps the bait in place for casting, also at times hooking the fish when the main hook has 'missed'.
