I use a tapered shock leader and the slim beauty knot to join mainline to leader and have never ever had the joiner knot catching on the guides, as for distance I can not say as I have never dry casted it and have no means of measuring if i did also I have been using 30lb braid for for surfcasting on the east coast unless I am using the overhead then it is mono.
