If you are on my right geno the lead with a left hand swing goes outside the rod tip on my left, check out the photos Mark R did when I did the demo for the article he did in his mag article on uni tech casting. Because the lead goes outside of the rod tip in this and other modern techniques the lead goes faster as it tries to catch up. So a faster release means more distance/power when cast into the wind thats the theory and Marks excellent photos show this check out where the float mark was on the trace as the cast develops. This is matched up a progressive build up of power transmitted from the bodies more powerful muscle groups in the legs and chest as the weight moves from the back to the front foot, the overhead thump only uses the arms and a very limited power arch hence its lack of distance and the power surge which sends free spools into a spin (out of control) unless seriously blocked or magged up.The arms give the rod the final punch pull after the power has been built up through technique. An excellent video by Dave Docwera in the UK five years ago shows an excellent off ground technique as does the work of John Holden which is available from veals on a CD.
