    Pure white tentacle Hamish.That means with the skin very carefully removed.
    Cut it thick as your little finger.. about the same length too and slip the hook down the centre of the leg bringing the hook point out 3/4 of the way down.
    Slice the remaining length of leg down the centre to make it waggle in the current.Tie the top end of the leg ABOVE the hook eye so it won't slide down the shank and strap on pilly fillet, tua tua,cray (prawn up here), crab, anchovy etc (size about half the length of the occy)

    Heave it, leave it, retrieve it.
    Remove your victim (snapper, lemon, kahawai whatever) and strap the next piece of bait straight in over the remains !!

    If none of the above steps work in the HB,
    move camp... coz it works like mad up here!
