Were you the guys with the longline out? Pilchards seem to work pretty well for the gurnard or some fresh kahawai fillet. They are pretty fickle though, to the point where your mate fishing 10m away from you can get about half a doz to your none.
Haven't heard of any snapper or kingis around yet, bit early but snapper do turn up along palliser during the warmer months and it would be worthwhile trying for a king around the rock ledges of cape palliser I reckon.
