I may be wrong but longlines appear to only be found in this country. Overseas beach fishing forums focus solely on surfcasting techniques and gear.
If we are to foster the sport surely a conservation of stocks is important. what is the line between "getting a feed" and over exploiting a natural resource. The quota system of allocation has been widely condemned because of the lack of research into the actual numbers and quality of fish stocks available. Who is to say that the bag limits for line fisherman are any more correct? Is the decline in numbers of large snapper real or simply a result of seasonal variations or is down to the number of hooks being deployed by longlines today in areas that perhaps ten years ago were out of reach when the wind did not blow in the right direction. Not sure how a discussion on conserving fish stocks is "playing with fire"?
