Not to much skill required Mark, but my intentions of using my longline, when in periods of hard fishing at locations such as Mahanga, or Waimarama the only two locations i really use the Electric Kontiki, are to purely gain a damm good feed of fish. The rods are fished at the same time, generally returning very little, as i run the longline during the daytime. I may catch the odd Gurnard, but generally a few Kahawai which are returned to the sea in the form of bait. I have one or two hands which each take half or a third of the divy of fish, which they take home to there families. I very rarely use my longline during the year, 8 to 10 trips out a year. It does not intrest me in sitting at Whirinaki, or Mohaka when the BIG Snapper are in, as i get no satisfaction of catching 8k plus Snappers on my Longline(Rather test the skill on the rods). Purely from a gathering perspective they are great, and there are limits just the same as other beach users. I have no gripe from a Surfcasting point of view, of Kontiki users taken 1 to 3 good Snapper home in a session, good on them, or a line full of Gurnard. Yeah there approach was LESS skillfull, however there intentions were to have an enjoyable time, and put a good feed on there families tables. Cool. This is no difference if we(Surfcasters) have taken there daily finfish limit, out on the beach on our rods. Ive done it a few times on Gurnard at Ocean beach, and at Tahaenui, and Snapper at Mahanga, Mohaka, and Whakaki. Mixed Bags, several other times(escpecially when the Pania clubs bag limit was 10 Kahawai, 10 Lemonfish(SSH) ). My fish does not get wasted whatso ever at ALL!!!. Longliners have taken a cut in the number of hooks used a few years back from 100 to 25. 25 is more than enough, and having 25 hooks on especially here in Hawkesbay doesnt mean you will fill ALL your 25 hooks on 1 set? NO. Again most Longliners are on the beach with 2 or more persons/ or families and the distribution of fish is for both families. It is those that choose to abuse the number and size of the fish they take consistintly time after time i get ANGRY with. Mark i remember when you were down here in Hawkesbay, and you used to do SEVERAL trips away filling your bin with Snapper and Gurnard on your rods. Now in the light of what you have been saying, how does this differ from some person or persons running a longline on a given day and securing a good feed???. No difference mate!. Different means, same result. I am not shunning you for taking those captures, i believe i commended you at those times, and would still do today. I respect you and your angling abilities, but it seems that if someone does or approaches something a different way your quick to bag them and point out how your methods are so much better and that others should do as you do, otherwise you dont want to no!. This message board is intended to share techniques and suggestions, not to tell someone bluntly there doing it all wrong, or there method is to be frownd upon. Take time to read this Team Breakaway. Im not the only one here with these views. Regards Kane.
