If you were new team approaching TVNZ or TV3 with a proposal for another fishing programme, their people would first ask what advertisers you will bring to the table. A hard one to answer if you haven't yet been on air. The next issue might be how good you look and perform in front of a camera. Your claimed reputation as an angler won't impress them overly much, although they'd expect you to produce shows that feature a number of good (big) fish being caught. To gain an audience and hence advertisers, shows need to entertain the general public, most of whom won't care too much for detailed lessons in rig making. I know of a new team going through the process, so I have some inkling of what's involved.
People like Graeme Sinclair look for people like Chad, who brings an enormous amount of energy and determination and a reputation for catching fish to the table. I can't keep up with him. I've just turned 61, so that's my excuse .
Because of the considerable expense involved, it's a given that you film where the best fish are likely to be caught in the shortest time. Northland is an obvious choice.
