I would invest in the reel first bro. You have two options really. Buy a cheep reel that will do the job like a rovex or jarvis walker.... and clean it most trips and really look after it and you will get good results

Buy a diawa like a emblem pro ect.... wind cast or something similar. And they don't really need the maintenance so much

For a cheep reel expect to pay $100- $120. for a mid range reel that is still bloody good, $180- $220.

What to look for in a reel...

#1 - Long cast spool - most important aspect. Short spools are bloody rubbish for surfcasting.

#2 - Extend the spool to the highest point, and see how much play it has, ie... the amount of wobble through the spool, weather is will be sturdy under pressure, most are ok.

#3 - Check the play through the handle, plastic handles like okuma reels ect... usually are quite sloppy.

As long as it has a long cast spool, and the reel is reasonably solid, that is the first step to casting further.......

Next I would look at the rigs and gear been used. 6kg is ideal to use, but use 8kg if you have not done allot of surfcasting and haven't mastered the art of not losing gear yet. Even a shitty rod with a decent reel using a light line weight will cast a long way.

Get your shock leader knots sorted, back to back uni's using 30-40lb mono leader and this will fly and give you a lot more distance.

    Rigs
If you use long cast rigs like IMP's and impact sheilds, stick at it. If you don't like them, shorten your traces and this will help it fly further.

Look into rods last. What gear are you currently using, you are more than welcome to have a burn on my gear and see what ya reakon.
