I started with a Javis walker 9' rock set-up I paid 60 bucks for, it then repaid me with fun, enjoyment, fresh fish, and now an obsession/addiction to fishing.
One thing I have learnt over the years is quality gear is a must and look after it, that 60 dollar set up and cheap gear caught me a lot of fish but also lost me some awesome fish including my 24lberthat my mate beside me caught (I even had to gaff it) shaw enough it had my rig in its mouth

I agree with the others not only a good rod and reel it starts from ya hook, good sharp hooks followed by good line, good components back to your reel (never skimp on a reel) you need to know your gear, what it can handle and trust it.
It is absolutely pointless going into a big store to buy gear from a guy who knows nothing about fishing. Dealing with tackle shops that have good gear, use it and give solid advice is a must its about building relationships and these guys tend to live and breath fishing and will point you in the direction of where people are catching fish.
Get out there be safe and enjoy yourself
